7 things not to do when doing Bar-A-Thon #BarAThon 2017 Day 7

Now that the second edition of Bar-A-Thon is coming to an end today, let me tell you that I had planned to pull out after the 5th day because I got distracted and lost the flow of words. I am here today, typing out this post, thanks to the encouraging chat with Tulika and the wish to see another shining badge on the blog’s sidebar.

For the last day, learning from my experience, I will tell you about what not to do when you have taken up the blogging challenge Bar-A-Thon –

Answer my 7 questions for #BarAThon 2017 Day 6

I am a mom who has a super inquisitive child who can drive me nuts with his interrogations from the moment I throw water into his face every morning and his button gets switched on. If you ask me, I do not switch it on deliberately but, I happen to brush his teeth. I am a mother and you see I am responsible for everything or atleast subject to questions on everything.

In between raking and scratching my brains and depending on googling for 7 and a half hours per day, I have developed my own set of questions and I need you to help me with the answers today for Day 6 of Bar-A-Thon.

7 books which made me who I am #BarAThon 2017 Day 5

The weekend is not exactly a good time to write and read blogs for me with Dhruv at home. Now that his time in school has extended and he comes back home at 4 pm, weekend is the only time left to listen to his chattering and stories and to play with him (I do not want to miss any of that). I am not going to talk about the chores here.

Now keeping in mind that my previous post about our 7 favourite picture book authors didn’t do well, I was aiming to write something of interest to the readers for Day 5 but my creative juices seem to have been suffering a drought. As it always happens, when things get tricky I turn to books. So, here is a list of 7 books which are responsible for making me who I am, in this phase of life – Continue reading

Our 7 favourite picture book authors #BarAThon 2017 Day 4

For Day 4 of Bar-A-Thon 2017, I have put together a list of Dhruv and my 7 favourite picture book authors whose works we have enjoyed reading over the past years –

1) Dr. Seuss

pixlrNo childhood is complete without reading The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. These 2 were a part of our first box set – Dr Seuss Beginner Books Collection. The repetitive rhyming words in the simple stories with a doze of humour appealed the most to us. Dr Seuss books are a vast collection ranging from –

7 reasons to have a second child #BarAThon 2017 Day 3

I was planning to write another post about books and reading today for Day 3 of Bar-A-Thon. Then, I thought it will lead to monotony. Therefore, I decided otherwise.

Today, I will give you 7 reasons why you should have a second child.

This topic has been widely written about and read and most of my reasons might also be stereotypes. Before proceeding ahead with my reasons, let me first share with you my learning on stereotypes – ‘You might (want to) move away from stereotypes but stereotypes are always here to stay.’

7 questions non-readers asked me #BarAThon 2017 Day 2

It is Day 2 of Bar-A-Thon 2017 and today I am going to pour out all the questions I have been asked by the non-readers, I have known by the virtue of relation or acquaintance.

Okay, not all but 7 since 7 is the theme for this 15 day long blogging challenge with alternate day blogging.

This is a long post. I couldn’t help it since these questions have waited a long long time to get converted from emotions to words.

For those who will make the effort to read this till the end, I hope you enjoy it.

Q1: “Madam, aap IAS ki tayyari kar rahi hain?”

For Day 1, I have chosen to write using the theme 7 and it is on a topic closest to my heart – 7 ways to make your child fall in love with books and reading.

A child is never too young to be introduced to books

For babies, there are board books and cloth books available which do not get damaged or torn with rough handling. Then there are “Touch and Feel” books

The wait is finally over #BarAThon Day 7

You have been dusty for a while.

Okay! For a long while.

You have been donning the corners waiting to be put to use.

You do know, but, that day is not going to come . You have been rendered useless for the last 3 years and there is no hope, henceforth too.

You have tried everything in your capacity to hold my attention – relentless stares, soundless cries and dust storms on movements.

You are despaired for nothing works on my thick hide.

You accuse me of being lazy for which I would like to correct you. It is called ‘laid-back’, sounds a lot more better.

If I am not wrong, you seem to have mapped up my mind which has been dreaming of buying a new oven.

You are alluring me, these days, with the money you will fetch me to fulfill my dream.

Okay. Fine. Thank you.

I want to congratulate you for your time has arrived. You have moved up occupying the top slot on my priority list. The grandparents left today after their 10 days stay. The Bar-A-Thon is ending today with this post. Thus, there is nothing more important on my mind than you for now.

I promise to find a new home for you in the next 15 days.

The old bookshelf, the pram, the high chair, the car seat – your wait is finally over.

This post has been written for Day 7 of the 7 day blogging challenge BAR-A-THON.

Today’s prompt is ‘Promise (to yourself/someone else)’.

Wishful thinking or Idealism #BarAThon Day 6

This morning while I was on my morning walk, there were loud noises coming from the basement. I had one ‘Mummyknowitall’ for company who told me there was a quarrel going on between  2 people over 2-wheeler parking.  I came to know one of them had been physically aggressive indulging in fist fight. And then she said, “Punjabis are like this, aggressive and over the top.”

So, it boiled down to labeling. The act of fist fighting.was undesirable in itself but labeling the doer on the basis of the state he came from? Can we not do without it? Or is it just wishful thinking on my part? And, I am not a Punjabi.

It  is not just about this incident. I have a long list of what can be considered as wishful thinking.

  1. People valuing relationships based on the concept of ‘dil ke rishte’ (connections of the heart) rather than superficiality of labels and position in relations.
  2. People considering each other on face value rather than indulging in reading between the lines.
  3. People minding their own businesses rather than meddling in others.
  4. Religious people showing acceptance for those who do not follow rituals and practices same as theirs or those who practice none at all.
  5. Shutting down of the numerous ‘dharmik channels’ because most of the Babas and Maas, through their preaching on these channels, only end up complicating the understanding of God for the common folks. They, instead of empowering the people and bringing them closer to God, become the self-assuming Gods themselves and tell people how vain they are.

The list is long but I am leaving it at 5 for this post.

“Dhroooov, where are you going to running with that bag? Come back. I need to sort out all your old stuff. Ufff!” I screamed, throwing my hands in the air, and followed him to the next room.

In the other room, he had turned the bag upside down and there were memories lying scattered all around him. I stood there standing by the door observing him as he was arranging those memories on the floor.

Memories from the days when he started walking always intending to go bare foot.

Memories from the days we spent together roaming around the town on foot. He wouldn’t agree to get tucked up in the stroller and so I happened to push the stroller with one hand and held his small hand with the other.

Memories from the days when braving the cold, after the rains stopped, we used to venture out because the joy of jumping in puddles matched to none.

Memories from the days when we spent the lazy sunny afternoons sitting on the benches at the train station watching the trains come and go.

Memories also come in pairs of different colours, I realised, perhaps.

“Are you here to buy them?”, he enquired.

His question broke my string of thoughts. He had put up a sign board saying ‘SALE’ and was quoting a price ranging from Rs. 10 to Rs 109.

“Who are you and what are you selling?”, I posed hoping to get an interesting answer.

“I am Agent Tiny and I am selling tiny shoes”, said he.
