How can children begin to heal after losing a pet? Balloons for Tiger takes an imaginative look at this tough topic as colorful balloons travel from the hands of children to their beloved cat who has passed on. This book lets children open up their hearts and imaginations for a magical journey to the farthest corners of the world, where they’ll meet skydivers, astronauts, superheroes, and everything in between. As they watch the balloons voyage to the other side of the rainbow bridge, they learn to positively process their grief. Balloons for Tiger is a great tool for any child who has experienced the loss of a pet- or any other loved one, too.
I loved this book.
It does not happen frequently that I begin my review in this way.
The storyline in this book is woven around 2 little girls releasing balloons in the sky with heartwarming personal messages as a way to deal with their grief on losing their paet cat, Tiger. Thus begins the journey of the balloons to reach the other side of the rainbow, to the animal heaven, to meet Tiger. Their journey is a fun-filled adeventurous one where they meet a number of interesting characters. At the end, the balloons reach Tiger who is found resting on a cloud in the animal heaven. Tiger is delighted to see the messages for her and she returns her love by showing a rainbow to the little girls who take it as a sign for Tiger is safe and sound.
The illustrations by Vanessa Alexandre are bright and cheerful. In a few of the illustrations, the balloons are shown to act cheekily causing to bring laughter for the little readers. My favourite page is where the balloons are in Rome with one of them eating an ice-cream and another one secretly attempting to pull the hair of a person focussed on taking his selfie.
I am sure if we had read this book while my son was still much younger, we would have enjoyed this book like crazy. The rhyming text is another aspect which works for the book.
The author, Lori Orlinsky, has created a loving tale for the little ones. There are also discussion questions and coping strategies given at the end of the book helping parents and educators work with the kids who are mourning the death of a pet or even a loved one. I recommend this book 100%.
Meet the Author:
