Him: Mummy, can I paint with water colours?
Me: It is not the right time now. I will be serving dinner in next 5 minutes.
Him: I am getting bored.
Me: Wait for 5 minutes and we will have dinner.
Him: What do I do in the next 5 minutes? Stay bored?.
Me: Hmm, you can colour using colour pencils in the meantime. Water colours will be too messy at this time. You can use them to paint tomorrow after you come back from school.
Him: Na!! I want water colours.
Me: Tidying them up will make us late for bed time. So use pencil colours.
Him: Water colours!
Me: 5 minutes over. Here comes the dinner. Come to the table.
Him, dragging his feet towards the table: My interest is killed.
Me: Hain? What did you say?
Later, at bed time, we sat down to read the book ‘Iggy Peck Architect’. In this book, a young boy Iggy Peck is passionate about constructing buildings out of everything he can lay his hands on – Soiled nappies, mud, pancakes & coconut pies, chalks, fruits and many more. When he lands in grade 2, his teacher bans him from building castles and towers in the class threatening to take him to the principal. The lines which follow are –

Oh dear! So, Dhruv picked up this line from here, I got it.
We had been reading this book for quite some time and I thought, how come I did not take note of this line earlier?
I know now what happens when he listens to a book for a long time, he learns each line by heart.
There is more to Iggy Peck’s story beyond his interest getting killed and this line being hurled across to me. A post dedicated to Dhruv’s love for Iggy Peck will soon follow.
Courtesy this book, the latest additon to his dreams is becoming an architect when he grows up. For now, he is satisfied with building 16 Decker Lego trains and tall Lego towers.

Ahh children are so attentive and how much they retain. It’s a different thing we mom’s might have to ‘kill their interest’ when it is evoked at odd hours of the day 🙂

Happy that Dhruv is more attentive while reading and picking that phrase from the book. So please make sure, at any cost not to kill his interests. LOL. BTW, I adore that taller Lego Tower. Convey my congrats to Dhruv.

Yes, they pick up so much more than we can ever imagine…and books have a lasting influence! Maybe you need to talk to him about this to find out just what ALL is influencing him! Not an easy job being a mummy, I tell you 🙂

How I love children quoting lines out of books and in the right context too! My nephew did that all the time and we loved it.

hahaha kids you never know what they learn from where… that’s a cool lego structure he built. I am surprised it stayed up even after being so tall. 😀

An amusing post! It is true, our favourite lines in a book, or lines that seem thoroughly unique have this impact on our memories! 😀

Ahhh! Being a Mother, its hard to confess. Its great how he is picking what he is reading. Kids however choose what best suites them. How tricky they are.

My daughter wanted to be an architect too when she was smaller. Now she has changed her mind!

Kids pick things really fast, without us realizing it, don’t they? And they know it very well when to use it against someone.
I’m looking forward to the next part of the story. Dhruv sounds a cute kid. 🙂
